♦ Largest number of reared Ezo Brown Bears in the world
The Noboribetsu Bear Park boasts the largest single number of reared Ezo Brown Bears in the world. As of 2007, there were 135 bears being reared there.

♦ Airline route in Japan with the most passengers
The airline route linking New Chitose Airport with Haneda Airport has the largest number of passengers in Japan; the yearly total exceeded 10 million for the first time in 2006.

♦ Largest purple Ezo rhododendron colony in Japan
The Onneyu Hot Spring in the city of Kitami (formerly the town of Rubeshibe) is the largest spa in the Abashiri region, and boasts a colony of approximately 280,000 purple Ezo rhododendrons - a designated natural treasure of Hokkaido.

♦ Largest crane-breeding area in Japan
Efforts, especially in eastern Hokkaido, have been made to breed Japanese cranes, which were once in danger of extinction, and the number of birds is now said to be in the region of 1,000.

♦ Largest production of racehorses in Japan
There are currently about 1,100 ranches in the Hidaka region, which is home to 80% of the thoroughbred and Arabian racehorses and the like born in Japan.

♦ Least populated city in Japan
As of December 2006, the least populated city in Japan was Utashinai, with just 5,198 people.

♦ Lowest population density in Japan
According to a national census carried out in 2005, the population density in Hokkaido is 71.94 people per square kilometer - the lowest in Japan.
 


Production

♦ Adzuki beans
In 2006, Hokkaido produced 56,000 tons of adzuki beans, which amounts to 87.6% of the national total.

♦ Squash
Hokkaido's squash production in 2005 was 108,500 tons or 46.3% of the national total.

♦ Potatoes
In 2005, a total of 2.15 million tons of potatoes were produced in Hokkaido, which makes up for 78.1% of the potatoes produced in the whole of Japan.

♦ Buckwheat
The area of buckwheat crops in Hokkaido in 2006 was 16,400 hectares, from which a total of 14,200 tons were harvested.

♦ Soybeans
Hokkaido continues to be Japan's top soybean-producing region, with 70,100 tons - or 30.3% of the national total - produced in 2006.

♦ Onions
In 2006, Hokkaido produced 625,100 tons of onions, which amounts to 54% of the national total.

♦ Lily bulbs
Hokkaido produces almost 100% of all Japan's lily bulbs, with the village of Makkari in Shiribeshi Subprefecture being Japan's number one lily bulb region.

♦ Beat
Hokkaido is the only place in Japan where beat crops are cultivated. In 2006, a total of 3,923,000 tons were produced.
 

♦ Largest production of newsprint paper in the world
The Oji Paper factory, in what is known as the "paper city" of Tomakomai, prides itself on being the largest-scale single newsprint-paper-producing plant in the world.
