Japanese drummers welcome Summit (July 7, 2008)

The Hokkyo Festival 2008 took place in nine Hokkaido municipalities on July 6, a day before the opening of the Hokkaido Toyako Summit. During the event, which was organized by an executive committee, Japanese drums were played simultaneously in different places. At the main venue in a warehouse at Muroran Central Wharf, approximately 140 people gave a dynamic performance, wishing for the success of the Summit.

A total of 2,000 people took part in the event at multiple sites including venues in Sapporo and Iwamizawa. Each was connected through an optical communications system, and participants simultaneously played a standard number called Yamabiko (meaning "echo") led by Yoshitaka Ota, the 51-year-old originator of the event, from the Muroran venue.
