Environmental event held at Summit host town (June 28, 2008)

Environment Minister Ichiro Kamoshita posts a "Stop global warming!" message at the Eco Gallery

TOYAKO - An event to mark the forthcoming Hokkaido Toyako Summit was held on June 28 at the Toyako Visitor Center in the Iburi Subprefecture town of Toyako. At the gathering, Environment Minister Ichiro Kamoshita asked people to take part in a nationwide campaign aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions by one kilogram per person per day to prevent global warming.

The Minster gave an address underlining the desire to promote the campaign to stop global warming from Toyako to the world. After the event, he asked the town to continue advancing measures against global warming as the Summit venue, saying that environmental consideration could be a feature of tourism, and expressing hopes that the town would balance such consideration with regional development.

The event was co-hosted by the Ministry of the Environment and an executive committee made up of Toyako Town and other bodies, and took place at the Eco Gallery set up on the center's premises by the ministry. Approximately 30 people including families attended the event, where Mayor Yoshio Nagasaki read the town's environmental declaration on the Summit.
