Eco-friendly dream house to be showcased (June 17, 2008)

A rendering of the zero-emission house to be shown in Shiribeshi Subprefecture's Rusutsu Village

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on June 17 the outline of a zero-emission house, a neo-futuristic showhome to be built in the Shiribeshi Subprefecture village of Rusutsu for the occasion of July's Hokkaido Toyako Summit. The ministry intends to use the house to promote Japan's energy conservation technology to the world during the environment-themed event.

The Japanese-style steel-framed one-story house is to be built on a site adjacent to the International Media Center, and will cover an area of around 280 square meters. A 14.5-kilowatt solar power system and a small 1-kilowatt wind power generator will be used to supply electricity to the living space in order to curb carbon dioxide emissions. A fuel cell system will also be used to power a footbath.

Cutting-edge, energy-saving appliances will be displayed in the rooms along with LED fluorescent lighting. A two-legged robot will welcome guests by serving tea, and visitors will be able to test-ride electric cars.

The total cost is estimated to be approximately 200 million yen. The house is scheduled for completion at the end of June, and will be open to the press from Japan and overseas during the Summit. After the meeting is concluded, the structure will be relocated and opened to the public.
