Eco-friendly grass used for Summit venue (May 30, 2008)

Grass grown using technology from Hokkaido Green Kosan Co., Ltd. is being adopted in site improvements at the Windsor Hotel Toya Resort & Spa

Grass grown using eco-friendly technology is being adopted in ongoing grass improvement for the Hokkaido Toyako Summit at the Windsor Hotel Toya Resort & Spa in Iburi Subprefecture's Toyako Town. The technology has been developed by Hokkaido Green Kosan Co., Ltd., a Sapporo-based bio-venture company. The bright green grass needs no pesticides to grow and maintain, prompting its use by Tokyo-based Kajima Corporation, a major general contractor responsible for the improvement work.

A Sapporo-based gardener spent two years developing the mixture of bluegrass and two other varieties using Green Kosan's pesticide-free technology. The process included the use of a special soil conditioner developed by Green Kosan in 2003 as well as organic materials such as charcoal from Hokkaido and fermented herring liquor.

The grass is being used to cover the area from the heliport where world leaders' helicopters will land to the hotel's front entrance, as well as a newly established open space of around 6,000 square meters.

An official from the Hokkaido branch of Kajima Corporation explained the reason for its adoption by saying, "The grass is relatively expensive, but we value it because it is pesticide-free. It is suitable for an environment-themed Summit."

Green Kosan plans to expand the use of the soil conditioner in the environmental field as well as in agriculture, and hopes to promote environmental technologies from Hokkaido by taking advantage of the occasion of the Summit.
