Press center unveiled (May 22, 2008)

Cardboard ducts are used to supply cold air in the snow cooling system.

RUSUTSU - The Hokkaido Toyako Summit's International Media Center (IMC) was opened to the press on May 21, showcasing a number of natural energy facilities and ingenious environmentally friendly devices.

The steel-framed IMC consists of a two-story press center with an area of 8,800 square meters and a one-story building of 2,200 square meters for press conferences by the meeting's chair and world leaders. The structure unveiled yesterday was the press center building, which houses a space for video media on the first floor and one for the press to work together on the second floor (around 2,000 square meters each). A showroom of around 1,000 square meters that introduces environmental technologies is also located on the first floor.

In the snow cooling system adopted, 7,500 tons of snow collected from the vicinity have been stored in a snow room under the first floor since early April. Cool air from the snow is dispatched through 100 ducts installed in the ceiling of the first floor. The ducts are made of cardboard and aluminum materials, all of which can be recycled.

On the building's terrace, a system that mists the area around the structure is installed to absorb heat from the building. The exterior walls are covered with frames made of thinned wood from Hokkaido, and green planters are arranged to protect from direct sunlight. The building will be handed over by the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in June, at which point communications equipment will be installed. The structure, which cost around 3.02 billion yen to build, will be dismantled after the Summit.
