Security tightened against terrorism (May 15, 2008)

Police officers apprehend a terrorist in the simulation

TOMAKOMAI - In the build-up to the Hokkaido Toyako Summit, a security training session was conducted on May 14 at Yufutsu Wharf in Tomakomai Port to prevent armed terrorists from entering Japan.

The training was based on scenarios with armed terrorists on board a moored freighter, and was attended by approximately 70 officers from the Tomakomai Police Station and the Tomakomai Coast Guard Station.

In the simulation, a terrorist who had come ashore was apprehended after a gunfight in which blanks were used, while another was arrested by coastguard officers on the ship.

The training was held to examine how local organizations can prevent terrorists from entering Japan at the border before riot squads arrive. Seiji Moriyama, chief of the Tomakomai Police Station, praised the event for its clarification of the roles of each organization.
