IMC to be completed by end of May (April 3, 2008)

Construction in progress at the site of the International Media Center, to be completed at the end of May

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau announced yesterday that the International Media Center (IMC) for the Hokkaido Toyako Summit, whose construction is behind schedule, will be completed on May 31.

The IMC, which will serve as the press conference site for the leaders of each country during the July summit, was initially scheduled for completion at the end of March. However, construction was suspended due to an accident at the site in February involving the collapse of temporary snow-protection roofing. The delay stems from this accident as well as modifications to the design of the facility.

The steel frame of the structure is almost complete, and work on the roof and outer walls is now under way. In addition, operation to preserve snow in an underfloor storage unit will be conducted early this month. This will be used to air-condition the building as an environmental measure.
